Through the years: Looking back at Patrick Mahomes' college career (2024)

On Feb. 12, former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes is returning to the Super Bowl. It will mark his third trip in four seasons. In each year since he became the full-time starter for Kansas City, Mahomes and the Chiefs have played in the AFC title game.

It felt like the passing of the torch from Tom Brady, the years prior to Mahomes getting to the title game, it was Brady who made the trip every season. The son of former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes set the NFL’s all-time yarding record with 5,614 yards. In 2022, he became the second quarterback to have multiple seasons of 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns. He led the NFL in both stats this season.

What the younger Mahomes is doing in the NFL is no surprise if you ask the people on the South Plains. He was lighting it up for the Red Raiders and then-head coach Kliff Kingsbury. He worked with current offensive coordinator Zach Kittley during that stretch. Kittley was a quality control coach that worked with quarterbacks.

Mahomes finished his Tech career as the No. 10 passer in Big 12 history with 11,252 yards and No. 8 with 93 passing touchdowns. In 2016, Mahomes had the 4th best season in Big 12 history as he accounted for 5,337 yards. At the time it was third best until Kyler Murray’s Heisman-winning season in 2018.

During the 2016 season we got to enjoy a game for the ages as Mahomes and former Texas Tech walk-on Baker Mayfield slugged it out in Lubbock. In that game, Mahomes set an NCAA record for total offense with 819 yards. Of that total, 734 yards came through the air. We might not ever see a game like that where Mahomes and Mayfield combined to set plenty of records.
