D4 Monday, March 4, 1991 Tornado hurts 10, leaves 75 homeless By Elizabeth Coady Staff writer A tornado touched down three times around dawn Sunday in southeast Georgia, injuring 10 people and destroying about 20 mobile homes, officials said. Up to 75 people were left homeless in Pierce County, officials said. "It took and twisted mobile homes up so bad you couldn't tell they were mobile homes," said Kenneth L. Justice, Pierce emergency management director. "Clothes, washing machines, just about anything you could imagine in a trailer was scattered across yards.

It was devastating." Pierce paramedic Jacob Hyres described "mass confusion" after the tornado did a vicious dance across a 15-mile swath. The Red Cross set up temporary shelters but closed them after the displaced found housing with friends or relatives. Simon Howard said he and his wife, Wanda, and their 5- year-old son, Joseph, were asleep as the tornado rolled their mobile home. "I didn't make it to get my britches on," Mr. Howard said.

"The house tilted over, and the next thing I remember I was crawling out. My child was able to crawl out, but my wife was trapped for a while under the bed." Mrs. Howard received minor injuries. "I'll tell you one thing: I won't live in another mobile home if I can help it," said Steve Cady. "I heard the wind come up and got my wife up.

I went into the living room, and by the time I looked out the door, the started turning over." He suffered a broken rib. His mobile home was destroyed. It took rescue workers until 2 p.m. to clear the dirt roads leading to the parks. Seven people were treated at Memorial Hospital in Waycross and released; three were admitted and were listed in stable condition early Monday.

The National Weather Service reported downed trees, unconfirmed tornadoes and wind damage in 18 counties across South Georgia, including Atkinson, Tattnall, Bullock, Lowndes, Brantley, Ware, Glynn, McIntosh, Wayne and Effingham. In Worth County, a mobile home park received minor wind damage. In Sumter, a chicken coop was blown over. Heavy rain hit several parts of the state. Augusta reported 3.65 inches, Valdosta 3.59 inches, Savannah 1.92 inches and Macon 1.72 inches during the 24 hours ended at 7 p.m.

Metro Atlanta had about a half inch of rain. More rain was expected in the metro area overnight, along with gusty winds. Today was expected to be clearer and cooler but windy once again. The Associated Press contributed to this article. 2 men injured in shootings DeKalb County police investigated unrelated shootings Sunday night that left two men wounded, one critically.

A 26-year-old Atlanta man told police two men approached him in the 2800 block of North Druid Hills Road about 8:30 p.m., robbed him, then shot him in the left leg. The victim, Marcus Linton Jones, was in good condition at Piedmont Hospital, police Sgt. R.D. Eunice said. Police refused to say what was taken from Mr.

Jones. Twenty minutes later, police were called to 2019 Chestnut Hill Circle in Decatur, where they discovered William H. Bacon shot in the neck. Mr. Bacon, 48, was in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital Sunday night, Sergeant Eunice said.

His wife, Regina, 33, was charged with aggravated assault, the sergeant said. "All we know at this time is it was a domestic dispute," he said. Elizabeth Coady The Atlanta Andrews Funeral Home 116 Ashby N.W., Atlanta, Ga. Buddy Andrews 522-7735 LITTLE, Mr. Mack Howard L.
