    Rotowire

Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and two steals in a 7-3 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Gonzalez reached on an error, stole second and came around to score in the third inning then added an RBI single and another steal in the sixth. After missing most of June with a hamstring injury, Gonzalez has appeared in three straight games and drew his first start in center field of the season. He has had trouble staying healthy this season and is hitting .279 with four steals over 43 at-bats.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Homers, scores three times in win

    Rotowire

Valdez went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and three runs scored in a 7-3 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Valdez hit a solo home run off Kevin Gausman in the fourth inning, walked and scored in the sixth then singled and scored in the eighth. Valdez has been hot in June, hitting .341 with 10 extra-base hits and 14 RBI in 44 at-bats. He rarely plays against left-handed pitchers, going 0-for-20 against them on the season, but he is hitting a respectable .252 with six homers and 25 RBI in 115 at-bats against righties.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Homers, steals two bases in win

    Rotowire

Duran went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two steals in a 7-3 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Duran hit a solo home run off Kevin Gausman in the fifth inning then added an RBI single and a steal in the sixth. He later stole another base after reaching on a fielder's choice in the eighth. Duran extended his hitting streak to 10 games and has hit .356 with three homers and eight steals in June. On the season, he is hitting .277 with six home runs and 19 steals hitting leadoff for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Strikes out six in win

    Rotowire

Bello (7-4) earned the win against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over six innings.

Bello threw three scoreless innings before loading the bases in the fourth, but he managed to limit the damage to two runs and responded with two more scoreless frames before leaving the game with a 5-2 lead. This was Bello's first quality start since May 22 and his best performance in June, as he surrendered 14 total runs over his first three June outings. On the season, Bello owns a 4.83 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 62:26 K:BB and lines tentatively lines up for a rematch with the Blue Jays next week.

    Stats

  • Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Heading to bench Wednesday

    Rotowire

Refsnyder is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Refsnyder had started in each of the Red Sox's last four games and in 12 of the team's last 14 games overall, but he'll hit the bench Wednesday as Boston rolls out an outfield of Jarren Duran, Romy Gonzalez and Tyler O'Neill from left to right. With Masataka Yoshida healthy again and serving as Boston's primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching and with Wilyer Abreu (ankle) nearing a return from the injured list, Refsnyder looks like he'll soon be headed for a short-side platoon role.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Sitting again Wednesday

    Rotowire

Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

After making four consecutive starts behind the plate, Wong finds himself on the bench for the second game in a row. Wong still looks to be the Red Sox's No. 1 catcher, but manager Alex Cora may have wanted to reward backup Reese McGuire with another start after he drew two walks in Tuesday's 4-3 win.

  • Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela: Taking seat Wednesday

    Rotowire

Rafaela is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Rafaela will get his first day off since May 30, clearing the way for Romy Gonzalez to pick up a start in center field. Though he's cobbled together a modest .687 OPS for the season, Rafaela has been running hot of late at the dish, slashing .468/.490/.596 with four extra-base hits and two stolen bases over his last 12 games.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Checking back into starting nine

    Rotowire

Hamilton (side) will start at shortstop and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Hamilton is back in the lineup after he was withheld from the starting nine Tuesday due to the left side injury he suffered in Monday's 7-3 win in the series opener. Despite opening Tuesday's 4-3 victory on the bench, Hamilton still made an impact with his legs, entering the game as a pinch runner in the eighth inning and contributing a stolen base and a run. With Hamilton checking out fine following his brief cameo Wednesday, he'll get the green light to start the series finale and will occupy a prominent spot in the batting order.

  • Red Sox's Angel Bastardo: Likely needs Tommy John surgery

    Rotowire

Bastardo, who was placed on Double-A Portland's 7-day injured list June 6, will likely require season-ending Tommy John surgery, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Bastardo will presumably receive another medical opinion or two on his elbow before a decision is made on a treatment plan, but he's expected to require a reconstructive procedure that will keep him out for the rest of the 2024 campaign and most, if not all, of the 2025 season. The 22-year-old right-hander had posted a 5.36 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 53:21 K:BB in 45.1 innings over his 10 starts with Portland prior to being deactivated.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Hitless in first rehab game

    Rotowire

Abreu (ankle) served as Triple-A Worcester's designated hitter and went 0-for-4 with a walk in his first rehab game Tuesday.

The Red Sox plan to have him play again for Worcester on Wednesday with the hope that he'll be ready to return from the 10-day injured list ahead of Friday's series against the Reds in Cincinnati, per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Abreu has been on the shelf since June 4 with a right ankle sprain.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Enters as pinch runner

    Rotowire

Hamilton (side) entered Tuesday's game as a pinch runner, stole a base and scored a run in a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Blue Jays.

Hamilton was held out of the starting lineup after exiting Monday's game with discomfort in his side. He eventually entered as a pinch runner in the eighth inning and scored the game-winning run after stealing his 19th bag of the season (fifth in MLB). Ten of those 19 steals have come in the last 11 games. Boston manager Alex Cora told Ian Browne of MLB.com there's a good chance Hamilton will return to the starting lineup for Wednesday's series finale.

    Rotowire

Rafaela went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Toronto.

Rafaela drove in the game-winning run with an eighth-inning single. The rookie's bat continues to sizzle; Rafaela has hit safely in seven consecutive games, including multiple hits in six of those contests. He's 16-for-26 (.615) with three doubles, a home run, two steals, four RBI and six runs scored during the streak.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Goes yard again

    Rotowire

O'Neill went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run and an additional run during Tuesday's 4-3 win over Toronto.

After swatting a pair of homers in the series opener against the Blue Jays, O'Neill homered again Tuesday, tagging Brendon Little for a game-tying solo shot in the eighth inning. O'Neill has generated multiple hits in four of his last five games, going 8-for-23 (.348) with four home runs, seven runs scored and seven RBI during that stretch.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Perfect for save No. 13

    Rotowire

Jansen earned the save Tuesday against Toronto, striking out one batter during a perfect ninth inning.

Jansen has now converted on nine straight save chances and hasn't allowed a hit or walk across his last 2.2 innings of action. He's picked up a save in four straight appearances and is tied for the fifth most saves in the American League. Overall, Jansen owns a 2.70 ERA and a 30:11 K:BB across 23.1 innings.

  • Red Sox's Tanner Houck: Falls short of quality start

    Rotowire

Houck didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Toronto, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks across 5.2 innings. He struck out five.

Houck ended up one out shy of a sixth consecutive quality start, getting pulled at 103 pitches after yielding an RBI single to Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Houck has struck out five or more batters in seven straight starts and owns a 4-2 record with a 2.17 ERA across 45.2 innings during that stretch. He's scheduled to close out a two-start week Sunday at Cincinnati.

    Stats

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Activation confirmed

    Rotowire

The Red Sox reinstated Martin (personal) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Martin was placed on the IL in early June after informing Boston of his issues with anxiety, but he will rejoin the Red Sox' active roster just one day after becoming eligible. Martin tossed a scoreless inning at Triple-A Worcester as part of his rehab, and it's possible the hiatus will be what Martin needs to right the ship after falling to a 4.22 ERA in 21 appearances with Boston this season. Cooper Criswell was optioned to Worcester in a corresponding move.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Sent to Triple-A

    Rotowire

The Red Sox optioned Criswell to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Criswell will give up his active roster spot to Chris Martin (personal), who's being activated from the 15-day IL. Criswell posted a 4.15 ERA across 52.0 innings with Boston and should be one of the first options the Red Sox look at if a starter were to get injured.
