Aaron Boone’s reaction to the Red Sox base-running: The Red Sox scored a 9-3 win over the Yankees at Fenway Park on Sunday, doing so partly through aggressive base-running (as well as Boston pitchers holding New York to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position).

Boston stole nine bases, a team record for a single game:

The defeat meant the third place Red Sox (37-35) took the series from the first place Yankees (50-24). Despite trailing New York in the standings by 12 games, Yankee manager Aaron Boone had to admit that Boston was able to impose itself on the base paths.

“There are certain teams that that’s their DNA, and that’s how they’re going to play,” Boone said after the game. “Obviously, the Red Sox have a number of fast players, and that’s how they play the game right now. We’ve faced a handful of teams that you go in and it’s similar and you prepare the same kind of way. I have a lot of confidence in how we address and control running games. Today, we didn’t get it done.”

Boston now has 69 steals in 2024, first in the American League.

“It’s on all of us,” Boone acknowledged. “It’s a group effort. It takes everything to control running games. They have a very fast team, and their running game beat us tonight. We’ve got to do a better job overall of controlling those things, slowing them down, and we didn’t do it well enough tonight.”

The Red Sox defeated the Yankees 9-3 on Sunday to take two of three from New York. Boston begins a new three-game set in Toronto against the Blue Jays tonight at 7:07 p.m.

Tonight, the Celtics face the Mavericks in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Following the blowout loss in Game 4, Boston still leads the series 3-1 and can clinch a championship with a win. The game tips off at TD Garden at 8:30 p.m.
